A stay in The Stanley’s Main Building is an invitation to step into the history of this storied Colorado landmark. Built in 1909, the hotel’s beautifully preserved rooms blend historic character with thoughtful comforts, each offering its own connection to the past.

Step into room 217

Famously known for being the inspiration for Stephen King’s ‘The Shining’, Room 217 is a landmark location for enthusiasts of the paranormal. It is here that the ghost of Elizabeth Wilson is said to roam. This former Head Housekeeper experienced a near fatal gas explosion in the room and while she lived to tell the tale, legend says her spirit returned to Room 217 after her death to wait on guests. She can often be experienced through the folding of guests’ clothes, unpacking their belongings, and neatly lining up their shoes.
