Whiskey Education, Straight Up, at The Stanley

ESTES PARK, Colo. – June 13, 2013 – Whiskey’s popularity is on the rise, with more distilleries and whiskey watering holes popping up every day. While it may seem overwhelming to even the most experienced and salty fans of the spirit, Whiskey University at The Stanley Hotel sets out to shed light on the vast and complex world of whiskey.

Whiskey University is an educational tasting series held at the historic hotel’s Whiskey Bar, whose whiskey collection is comprised of nearly 600 labels from around the world. Past flights have featured whiskeys of Kentucky, whiskeys from around the world, Irish whiskey and Scotch blend whiskeys.

“The world of whiskey, along with each blend’s unique qualities and flavors, is incredibly intricate and full of history,” said Jimmy Kuch, who leads the series. “If you have any interest in whiskey, or any other spirit for that matter, you owe it to yourself to educate your palate and learn the discerning tastes of whiskey. And of course, the tastings are a lot of fun.”

Kuch is one of a handful of bartenders at the Whiskey Bar and Cascades Restaurant, who serve more as guides, talking guests through the collection of whiskeys and Wine Spectator award-winning wine list. They’re so knowledgeable about their craft that they’re referred to as “libation engineers.” One of their many specialties is mixing up one of their popular prohibition-style cocktails, like the Jersey Devil, or concocting something new like the bacon bloody mary.

The whiskey tasting series includes appetizers, costs $39 per person and begins at 7:30 p.m. Upcoming summer programs include American Whiskey Cocktails on July 17 and Isles of Scotland on August 14.
